A house of praise and worship for 75 years

Brooklyn Congregation 75th birthday 01675 years ago the congregation of Brooklyn first opened its doors during an inaugural divine service conducted by Apostle HF Schlaphoff on Sunday 11 November 1934.

To commemorate 75 years of being a house of praise and worship the Shepherd R Africa had an array of events planned to celebrate this special birthday. It all started with a brunch at 11:00 to which all the senior members of the congregation were invited. As the pioneers of the congregation they reflected on the earlier years when they first gathered in the church. This brought back special memories of their childhood.
At 13:00 the Sunday school children and their teachers were treated to a delicious meal, dining in style to the background music of a chamber orchestra. After enjoying their meal they had the opportunity of viewing some images of past events which took place in the church throughout its lifespan. The children had a wonderful time as they interacted with one another and had some fun whilst playing games.
The afternoon’s activities were concluded with dinner being served to all congregants along with retired ministers who have served in the congregation. Many of the members arrived at 18:00 dressed in the attire of the 1930’s. The younger group found this remarkable as today’s fashion statements resemble that which was worn 75 years ago. Wonderful moments were shared in the company of those who have long since moved to other congregations. Off course there were interesting stories that were told and retold to the enjoyment of all present.  The Wednesday evening activities closed with all those present cleaning the church in preparation for the festive divine service that was to be held the following evening by Apostle C van der Merwe.
The birthday celebration of Brooklyn congregation was crowned with this divine service. During the course of this service the Apostle ordained six deacons for the congregation. Blessed moments were experienced by the members of Brooklyn congregation as their hearts were filled with more than they asked for.
