Family Fun Day

50Fellowship is the logical offshoot of a vibrant congregation and as a result a fellowship on a mammoth scale was planned and hosted by Apostle J Stephen’s area. After much consideration the planned fellowship evolved into a Family Fun Day, which incorporated a soccer and netball world cup series, a kiddies play area and an area that would cater for the “spoiling” of senior members. Much joy and excitement was created among the various teams who were not only representative of the Apostle Stephen’s area, but came from adjoining apostle areas as well. This was serious business as team managers and coaches gathered to prepare their teams for the momentous occasion.

Saturday 23 July 2009 eventually dawned and at the Good Hope Centre that had been hired for the event, one could feel a buzz in the air. Members travelling from as far afield as Paarl came by train to participate. The proceedings started with an opening parade during which each team walked by to the cheers of the supporters. Some apostles and bishops also formed part of the marching parade. There was a strong focus on the Thanksgiving theme of recycling and the mascots or better said drum majorettes were dressed to the nines in their recyclable outfits.

Down in the basement of the Good Hope Centre there was another buzz of activity. This was where the food stalls were housed. With so much excitement, certainly one could get hungry and here you were sure to be fed accordingly. In the adjoining halls, the children were entertained in a play area specifically created for them. One could see their enthusiasm as they participated in games and many other fun activities. The seniors in turn could enjoy manicures, pedicures and hairdos. Even a consultation with medical professionals was on offer.

Soon the games started and the cheering and roaring sounds of the crowd could be heard all around the arena. At lunch time there were stage shows harnessing the talents of both young and old with solo and group performances, much to the enjoyment of the audience. Soon the matches came to a close with Germany (Parkwood District) and Argentina (Hanover Park District) playing in the final. Germany won and was crowned as victors. The final netball match was contested by Spain (Heideveld District) and Croatia (Apostle Arendse’s Area). Croatia was crowned as the victors.

All too soon the day drew to a close. This event that had been planned over the past few months was hailed a success as the members could not stop talking about the wonderful opportunity they had to have fellowship with one another.
