Parkdene's very own unveiled
Already on Saturday afternoon, as the members were pinning down the last nail to all their preparations...
the excitement was visible from the youngest to the oldest. This is the excitement you’d wish them to preserve as it sure brings hope for the future. Almost every member in this congregation was here yesterday afternoon; all doing their bit in making sure that all is in order for this divine service. Today, Sunday 12 July 2009, District Apostle Noel Barnes dedicated the brand new church building for the congregation of Parkdene. For this divine service the District Apostle read out a text word taken from Luke 21:1-4 and this too set the tone for the future.
A brief history was then showed on screen, and this gave visitors more insight into the establishment of the congregation. It was in the early 1980’s that six families started gathering for divine services in various households around Parkdene. This decision came after they first had to travel lengthy distances to get to church, first Rosemoor then Cornville congregations. From these humble beginnings this congregation is now home to approximately 350 active members who are now proud to point their place of worship out to everyone.
Bishop L Lakey and District Elder T Stephens received the serving of Holy Communion on behalf of the brothers and sisters in the beyond. Furthermore, 1 community evangelist and 3 shepherds were ordained for the congregations in this area. Community Evangelist E Paulse was ordained into the shepherd ministry and he will serve as the rector of Parkdene Congregation.
Later on, with the congregation as witnesses, District Apostle Barnes handed over the keys to the new building. With the words, “I give you the key, symbolic as the key to the heart of the congregation”, the responsibility of the new church building and the congregation was firmly placed in the hands of the newly ordained rector.
After service all newly confirmed youngsters in this congregation posed for a picture with the District Apostle. District Apostle Barnes also took the opportunity to wish them well for the future and further encouraged them to remain steadfast.
Present at this dedication ceremony were the Mayor of George, Mr. Flip de Swart, the Municipal Manager, Mr. Cecil Africa and the principals of the two schools that housed this congregation for Sunday morning and Wednesday evening divine service for the past nine years.
