The Sunday school children of Parkwood North Congregation visited the recycling plant in Athlone on Saturday 28 March 2009.
In the early morning of a foggy Saturday, the children met their teachers at the church at 07:00 and after prayers, the group departed. At the plant they were met by their tour guide, Jameyah Armien, who took them to the conference room for an educational talk. Later on, the children were given reflective jackets to wear and then they started touring the plant. Here they learnt that the refuse that the trucks bring in is first of all weighed to avoid overloading at the plant. The trucks then tip the refuse which is later removed to another area by huge loaders. Their next move is to the sorting area where some 200 employees stand alongside a conveyer belt sorting the refuse into categories. They are then compacted into square bundles and sent to various factories for recycling. More than an hour later, this group went back to the conference room where some interaction about what they had learnt ensued. They were each presented with goodie bags. After this, the visiting group waved goodbye to the employees of the plant and headed back to their congregation, where their rector had prepared a delicious breakfast for them. Overall, they learnt not to litter but to, Recycle, Re-use and Reduce.
