Launch of youth centre for 15-17 year old youth, Cape Town district
On 4 August 2006, the Cape Town district’s “youth centre” was officially opened by Shepherd P Wilson at the Salt River Community Centre. Prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony, one of the youth from the age group, Shalagh-Ann Fredericks, welcomed the young people to this first-of-its-kind centre.
The idea behind the “youth centre” for this age group is so that those who sit at home bored every Friday night can get out, meet and have fellowship with their peers in the youth. Enjoyable activities such as board games, table tennis, play stations etc. are all arranged to keep those present from the feeling: “I have nothing to do!”
A working committee from the ranks of the youth has been formed and they, in conjunction with the hosting congregation plan and arrange the events. Gatherings in this youth centre will take place on the first and second Friday of every month.
For the first event 32 youth out of the 41 in the district were present. As the youth have been encouraged to invite their friends to these events, there were also 4 visitors. Surveys that would help plan future events were distributed and completed. All completed surveys were placed in a box and at the end of the evening five names were drawn and each of the five winners received a prize.
