The weekend of Friday 23 to Sunday 25 March 2012 was designated as a celebratory weekend during which members, past and present, from the congregation of De Kuilen would celebrate 10 years since its dedication.
Activities surrounding the church hall’s birthday was surely something of great significance to many when hundreds arrived at each of the four planned activities.
Kick-starting events was a family braai at the De Kuilen Primary school sports field where a host of fun family activities kept the children in the group well entertained with jumping castles and kiddies rides among the many entertaining activities. A cricket match would see the ministers face off against the youth, with Apostle A Kriel opening the batting. Needless to say the older men group came second best this time around.
Three, five and ten kilometre walks were the perfect follow on to a night of good treats when the community joined the members for the annual Friendship Walk. They, along with Bishops B Adonis and K Schoeman, walked as much as ten kilometres.
Choruses from Haydn’s Creation thrilled listeners when a choral choir and orchestra concluded the birthday celebrations in a choral hour at the church the following day which was preceded by a divine service conducted by the rector of the congregation, Shepherd G van der Hoven. Many from the surrounding neighbourhood, along with previous members and friends and family, joined the resident congregation in celebrating what was to them a special milestone reached.
