The monthly programme of District Apostle N Barnes informed that a Fun Walk should take place throughout the area on Saturday, 26 May 2012.
This is the third annual event of the Cape District Church since 2010 in aid of charity around the festival of Pentecost.
The announcement sparked a hive of activity in the area of Apostle Brian De Vries where it was decided that instead of monetary donations, participants would bring a can of food to be donated to charities and the underprivileged in the area.
With the overarching 2012 theme: “We Can Walk” more than 1500 participants’ set-off, undeterred by the predicted rain, from the various churches in Mitchell’s Plain along a pre-determined route to the Westridge Gardens, Mitchell’s Plain. At the venue the walkers personally delivered their donations (cans) at a CAN receiving station marked-out by the motto of the day.
The fun walk was followed by an entertainment programme and ceremony which concluded with a keynote address by the Apostle De Vries. In his address the Apostle noted that this year’s event coincided with International World Hunger Day which is celebrated on Monday, 28 May 2012. This announcement brought about a feeling of inner fulfilment that every step taken was for a worthy cause.
The banners and smiles by young and old tell the story of the mega-event. It was a befitting pre-cursor to the blessed feast of Pentecost the next day.
