Their lives shared for 50 years

On Sunday 28 September 2008, Apostle M Diedricks conducted a divine service in the Durbanville congregation. During this divine service the retired Shepherd Lionel Lassen and his ever so beautiful wife of 50 years, Elizabeth, received the golden wedding anniversary blessing. It was in 1950 that Elizabeth Van Vuuren got to know Lionel Lassen as a friend. As years went by their friendship grew into a loving relationship and after years of courting they tied the knot on Saturday 27 September 1958. Lionel and Elizabeth have shared many beautiful memories together and this was evident as they stood in front of the altar to receive their blessing with the congregation of Durbanville as witnesses.

District Apostle N Barnes conducted a divine service in Laingsburg congregation on the evening of Wednesday 24 September 2008. During this divine service, the retired Sub Deacon C Deveraux and his beautiful wife Marie received their silver wedding anniversary blessing. On the very same day in 1983, Marie married Cecil Deveraux and they continued on this path of love for 25 years.

During the course of this divine service, the congregation witnessed the Diamond wedding anniversary blessing of Brother Walter Gouvias and his wife of a beautiful 6 decades. They were presented with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation on being an inspiration to so many in the congregation. Having spent 5 decades of their lives together, the Jacobs couple received their 50th wedding anniversary blessing on Sunday 17 August 2008. Bishop C van Wyk bestowed the wedding anniversary blessing on the retired Community Evangelist Jacobs and his wife Anna. The congregation of Strand South stood as witnesses during this blessed event.

On the evening of Wednesday 30 July 2008, Bishop C van Wyk conducted a divine service at the Gordon’s Bay congregation. During this divine service Priest A Andries and his wife of 25 years, Betty, received their silver wedding anniversary blessing. Betty Williams married Arthur Andries on Sunday 17 July 1983.

On Saturday 12 July 2008, the retired Priest R Benting and his wife Maureen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. During a divine service conducted by Apostle B de Vries at Eisleben South congregation on Sunday 13 July 2008, the Benting couple received their 50th wedding anniversary blessing from the apostle. After the service the husband and wife were invited along with all the seniors in the congregation to a breakfast arranged by their rector at a local community hall especially for this event.

During this divine service the district elder bestowed a Golden wedding anniversary blessing on Brother Henry Trout and his wife of 50 years Hester. The District Evangelist N Damonze and his wife of 25 years, originally from Canada, received their silver wedding anniversary blessing from Apostle M Diedricks.

 

 

A Golden wedding anniversary

In 1951 an unemployed Nicholas Brooks got a job at Pals Clothing factory through his sister who was already working there. The evening before he started at his new place of employment, Nicholas got a message from his sister that a certain Lizzy had told her to tell him that “There is a pretty girl working here”. A shy Nicholas never took advantage of this message and it was only after a year that the two, Nicholas and Elizabeth, became good friends and their courtship of 6 years began. Lizzy testified of her faith to Nicky and eventually he was ordained as a minister in the New Apostolic Church. On Saturday 26 July 1958, Elizabeth and Nicholas were married in Athlone congregation. 50 years later retired Shepherd N Brooks and his beautiful wife Elizabeth received their Golden wedding anniversary. The congregation of Pacaltsdorp stood as witnesses as Apostle H Swartbooi bestowed the wedding blessing on the Brooks couple on Sunday 27 July 2008.

 

Joyce and George Parrish were married . . .

. . . on Saturday 11 June 1983 and on this day 25 years later they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. During a divine service conducted by District Elder H Peters in Korsten congregation on Sunday 13 July 2008, the Parrish couple received their silver wedding anniversary blessing.

In 1941 Basil Hambides met Stella Langford for the first time, but as his first brother’s girlfriend and then again as his second brother’s girlfriend. Despite the attention she got from the other Hambides brothers, it was the love between Basil and Stella that blossomed and saw them celebrating their Iron wedding anniversary. During a divine service conducted by District Apostle NE Barnes in Welgelegen on Sunday 15 June 2008, the retired Priest Hambides and his wife Stella received their Iron wedding anniversary blessing. Stella Doreen Langford married Basil Hambides on Saturday 12 June 1943.

On Sunday 15 June 2008 Apostle M Diedricks visited the ST Johannes Heim Retirement home for German residents and bestowed a Iron wedding anniversary on this precious Katsch couple. Friends and staff at this retirement home stood as witnesses as the apostle presided over this 65th wedding anniversary. . . . which Herbert Atwood stole from Norma Zerf on one Sunday evening in 1954. A surprised Norma was not aware of the fact that this was to be the beginning of their lifetime together. They were later married on Friday 30 May 1958. And during a divine service conducted by Apostle M Arendse on Sunday 1 June 2008 in Firgrove congregation, this couple received their golden wedding anniversary blessing. The retired Priest H Atwood and his wife, Norma, received the well-wishes of the congregation.

The retired Priest F Classen and his wife of 50 years Sophia received their golden wedding anniversary blessing from Apostle M Diedericks on Sunday 1 June 2008. This blessed ceremony was witnessed by the congregation of Dunrobin. Sophia Hendricks married Frank Classen on Saturday 31 May 1958 and in blessing this golden wedding the apostle gave the couple a text word taken out of Job 23:10 “When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold”.

Double Bubble led to Double Blessing

27 years ago the Willis brothers met the Murphy sisters over Citizen’s Band, channel 22 (Double Bubble) – a Mxit and Facebook programme of the 20th century. This led to Roly Poly (Kevin Willis) meeting Lady Montoya (Debbie Murphy) and Spiderman (Frederick Willis) meeting Fair Lady (Lorraine Murphy) and two years later their courtship resulted in marriage for the two brothers and the two sisters. This all happened on Saturday 7 May 1983. The retired Apostle AA Mitas dispensed the wedding blessing on these couples. 25 years later Apostle B de Vries bestowed a silver wedding anniversary blessing on Community Evangelist Kevin Willis and his wife Deborah and on Priest Frederick Willis and his wife Lorraine. This event took place during a divine service conducted by the apostle at the Hazeldene congregation on the evening of Wednesday 7 May 2008.

 

 

 

It’s funny how life turns out

Everyone says “It’s funny how life turns out.” Well in this case it really was strange and wonderful. The couple – Victor and Murial (also known as Val) celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2008, met each other at a wedding! Everyone always expects happy celebrations to bring people together but they rarely do. The marriage has borne and attracted many blessings such as their eight children and countless experiences, but it has also served as a testament of two individuals working hard at staying together. The most important blessing the union has however experienced has been a spiritual one - the family joined the Church in 1966. The blessing for their anniversary was dispensed by Apostle A. Kriel and they continue to serve as exemplary Christians in their love for each other.

On Sunday 30 March 2008, District Elder K Malan bestowed a silver wedding anniversary blessing on Priest V Johnson and his wife of 25 years Martha. Martha Mary Holloway married Vernon Johnson on Wednesday 30 March 1983 and this couple went on to spent 25 years of their lives together. De Kuilen congregation shared in this blessed and festive event.

On Friday 22 April 1983 Fiona Gwendolen Forbes married Jacobus Matthews and 25 years later they received their silver wedding anniversary blessing. Bishop J Bucchianeri bestowed the wedding blessing on Priest Matthews and his wife Fiona during the course of a divine service conducted by the bishop at the Dalvale congregation on Sunday 4 May 2008.

 

 

25 years ago, teacher met learner . . .

. . . and this union culminated in a silver wedding anniversary for René and Neville Mitas. Neville Mitas was René Thomas’s Afrikaans teacher at one stage, but later this relationship turned into something more serious. Eventually on Wednesday 23 March 1983, René and Neville got married and they received their wedding blessing from the retired District Apostle KR Gut in the Lotus River congregation. On Sunday 30 March 2008 Deacon Mitas and his beautiful wife of 25 years received their Silver wedding anniversary blessing from Bishop LV Lakey while the congregation of George witnessed the blessed proceedings.

A celebration of 25 years of marriage was proof of this. On Friday 1 April 1983 Caron Lynn Felkers married Frans Flores. On Sunday 13 April 2008 District Elder F Flores and his beautiful wife of 25 years, received their silver wedding anniversary blessing from Apostle GT Mintoor. Nellie Daniels agreed to marry Joseph Manuel and on Tuesday 11 February 1958 they entered into holy matrimony. During a divine service conducted by Apostle Diedericks in Uitsig on Sunday 2 April 2008 their anniversary blessing was bestowed on them.

Doreen Bocheo married Harry Wyngaard on Saturday 12 April 1958 and on this day in 2008 the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Fifty years ago when life was much simpler than it is today, Sylvia La Fleur and Gerald McKnight tied the knot on a Monday afternoon 7 March 1958. They were both fifteen years old when John asked Stella to be his “permanent girlfriend” and because she was “too young” to have a boyfriend she would run away whenever she saw him. On Monday 29 March 1948 Stella Butland accepted John’s proposal and married him. A period of 50 years has passed since then and this couple still holds hands as they did then. Monday 10 March 2008 marked 25 years of marriage for Priest Sammy Stallbaum and his wife Patricia. As the words of the song go: “. . . it’s unmistakable; each time I look in your eyes . . . I know why this love is unbreakable.” This is remarkable; being together for 60+ years. It’s no wonder I love diamond wedding anniversaries. Every time I see seniors celebrating golden or diamond wedding anniversaries I feel like singing and more often than not, I do (sing that is). On a beautiful summer’s day in December 1947 Mary Ethel Wadsworth and Godlief Johannes Claassen promised each other that they would stay together through illness and health. 60 years later this couple received their diamond wedding anniversary blessing in front of the same altar in Sydenham congregation where they received their marriage blessing all those years ago. On Sunday 23 December 2007 Bishop P Thompson bestowed the diamond wedding anniversary blessing on the Claassen couple with the congregation of Sydenham as witnesses.

On Sunday 27 January 2007, the Cleary Park congregants – in the Arcadia bishop area – were served by Bishop NT Nene for the first time.
