Grade 12 learners prepared in Nobuhle

On the evening of Tuesday 2 September 2008, Apostle G Mintoor called all the Grade 12 learners of the Nobuhle Bishop area together for a special meeting to address the subject of preparation for their final examinations. This special group met at the Fernwood Park church where a message of encouragement from District Apostle N Barnes was relayed to them on DVD. The Apostle also introduced them to Brother Alwyn Felkers, an education specialist, who gave them pointers on how to prepare for examinations. In the coming month the Grade 12 learners are expected to sit for their final examinations and this group will be the first to write the new National Certificate Examination. We wish them well in their endeavours!

At the core of the pursuit of excellence

Saturday 16 August 2008 saw the district ministries who serve in the apostle area of Apostle G Mintoor gather for an annual conference. This meeting was held under the banner “In Pursuit of Excellence” and it saw many factors that could contribute towards the fulfillment of the Lord’s work brought to the table. Some of the discussion points included a spiritual portion, welcare projects for the Eastern Cape, the importance of the mission and vision statements and many other issues that affect growth in the congregations. This conference also served to strengthen the fellowship between the brothers that are in leadership in the various areas of this apostle district.

Shutting Xenophobia out

Having seen the recent xenophobic outbreak in the most prominent cities of the country, Apostle G Mintoor suggested that Bishop L Vaaltein meet with the rectors and district ministries in his area of responsibility to explore means of preventing xenophobic attacks in the area. This meeting was held at the Bereng Street congregation and members of the South African Police Services who were notified of this meeting were in attendance. The meeting kicked off at 19:00 on Monday 26 May 2008 and the bishop opened it with a prayer and a text reading taken out of John 4:11. Firstly, the group was introduced to the reason for the meeting and the attacks as seen on the national media were discussed. Those present dealt with what was thought to be the root causes of xenophobia and all agreed that certain terms amongst the communities should be discouraged. All present were urged to promote awareness among family and friends and the sharing of the given text word. The members of the SAPS expressed gratitude to the Church for having taken steps in helping them fight crime. It is interesting to note that media reports portrayed minimal, or no xenophobic attacks in the Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth areas.

Mission works in Bathurst

A mission team of 35 members from Alexandria district went on a trip to Bathurst over the week-end of Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 May 2008. Earlier on the District Elder Jatiem accompanied by Community Evangelist Jacobs visited the area to arrange accommodation and a hall for the purpose of holding a divine service. These ministers were well received and the mission team was even more welcome in the area. Upon their arrival at Bathurst the squad went knocking from door to door inviting the members of the community to a choral hour which was scheduled for 15:30 that Saturday afternoon. A total of 75 visitors attended the choral hour and when the time came for the last music rendition, the audience requested more. After joyous moments of music and dancing the audience was invited to the divine service which was to be conducted in the same community hall the following day. Some 30 guests attended the divine service and some requested that the group return in the near future. The team was very excited about the results of this trip and are willing to speedily return to Bathurst to follow up on those people who have shown an interest in the faith.

Apostle Mintoor serves in Aberdeen

For the divine service of the evening of Wednesday 8 May 2008 the congregation of Aberdeen was served by Apostle G Mintoor. This served as a great preparation for the Pentecost service which was to take place the following Sunday. During this divine service the congregation of Aberdeen witnessed the act of holy sealing being bestowed on some new members. Upon conclusion of the divine service Apostle Mintoor wished Sister Sarah Petersen well on her birthday.

Perseverance pays

Following the divine service of Sunday 28 October 2007, the congregants of Kwa Dwesi congregation got into transport that had been organized for them and left – some for the first time – their area to witness the turning of the sod ceremony on the site where there will soon be a church building. Currently, the Kwa Dwesi congregation gathers in the back yard of one of the sisters, after a long chain of places of worship. The arrival of the congregants at the site was marked by joyous singing. Bishop LD Vaaltein – with the assistance of District Elder C Nel and the rector of Kwa Dwesi congregation, Community Evangelist G Zitho – officiated at the sod turning ceremony. Choir members from Fernwood Park joined the members of Kwa Dwesi at the site and shared in their joy of soon being able to worship in their very own church building.
