Students served
On Sunday 28 October 2007 Bishop C van Wyk held a divine service for students attending the University of Stellenbosch and other tertiary institutions in and around Stellenbosch. More than 130 students, together with the district ministries and rectors of the area attended the service. Also in attendance was the retired Bishop W Vollenhoven, who has now been dubbed “NACSS Dad” by the students. For this service Bishop Van Wyk used a text word taken out of the Epistle to the Hebrews 3:8 “Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness.” Bishop Van Wyk urged the students to be “goal driven” like a Daniel and also not to forget their role in the Lord’s plan of salvation. After the service Bishop Van Wyk had fellowship with the students.
The right heart’s attitude
On Sunday 21 October 2007 some 14 youth members from the Windsor Park congregation visited the Eden Park retirement home in Kuilsrivier. Their visit to this home saw much appreciation from the seniors and taught the youth a lesson as well. They clearly realized how much it is appreciated when somebody shows that they care. Eden Park is also now the home of one of our senior sisters, Sister Norma Chicolus, who is served by two local priests from the Voёlvlei congregation. Sister Chicolus was deeply moved by this “deed of love” as the youngsters sang hymns from the hymn collection. Because of the response they received, the visiting youth asked when they would be able to return for a visit to sing again.
NACSS chairpersons meet with pastoral leaders
NACSS is a student society which is in existence in the following tertiary institutions: Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Cape Town, University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape. The society was formed to provide pastoral care for students who are away from home and can only attend church services irregularly. The chairpersons of this society at the various institutions met with the bishops responsible for their institutions for the first time in September 2007. The main reason for this meeting was to introduce the various institution chairpersons to each other and to introduce Bishop AM Lutuli as the new bishop responsible for the University of the Western Cape. He took over from the now Apostle A Kriel who, as a bishop, was responsible for the NACSS in this university. This meeting proved fruitful as relationships were formed and synergies assured.
